"Who put this giant gaping hole in my camera?" Oh right, it's where the lens goes. OK, here's a better question "Who gave me this boring cap to plug the hole with?" The answer would be -- your camera manufacturer did.
Sure plain ol' black is a safe color choice, but it would look so much snazzier with a cool camera model number, and even better yet - your info on there too (up to 68 characters total) in case your camera walked away.
